Class recap 4/24

Today in class we worked on groups in the computer lab on presentations. Our presentations were on different inventions that came about around the 1870s when people had started moving west. Mine was barbed wire. I liked this activity because it is creative and different.

Class Recap 4/23

Today was one of my most favorite of the year, even though mr. Boyle was not there. We lived the class as if we lived in a sod house by smelling it, seeing how hard it was to take a picture and by setting up a pretend house. My overall impression of living in a sod house was that I did not like it, it is cramped and the smell is awful. I would not last very long in one of these houses, as a matter of fact I would be one of the people who stayed in the city or went back to it after about a week of being out west. We also had a competition who could smell the sod the longest. Brittany won :)

Class Recap 4/22

Today in class we did the Triton 16% plan for the first time. It is a project based on the google 20% plan, which gives us one day to work on a project of our choice that doesn't have to be history related in order to earn a badge. We got to work on the computers which was good and made for an interesting class. I enjoy this so far and I am glad we get the opportunity to work outside the box.

Oregon trail/class recap 4/9

In class today we had to look at how the Oregon trail effected settlers/merchants, the pioneers and New Yorkers. I was a settler/merchant. For me, the trail brought almost nothing but good. Whether the business was excavating or something as small as printing newspapers and such, everything was affected. With more people passing through towns, the amount of customers went up, resulting in a better business. Also, the railroad allowed business like the printing press one to have easy access to states like Michigan where they held most of their resources.

Class Recap/Snap Debate 4/2

Today in class we tried something new; it was called a snap debate. After being put in groups based on what we chose in a poll, we were told to make an argument pertaining to why out subject was the most important factor of the start of the War of 1812. Initially, I was part of the incitement group which had to prove that instigation from the Indians was the main cause of the war. However, as the debate went on, I was persuaded into believing either the orders in council or impressment by the British was the main cause. I finally settled on impressment because it seemed to anger Americans the most, resulting in them wanting to fight. I was not persuaded into thinking the Chesapeake Affair was an important factor because if you look back on the big picture, it was still an impressment issue, just an example of it.

Class recap 3/18

Today in class we talked a lot about what were getting out of the class. We understand that learning history is important, but it's the skills were learning that mr. Boyle hopes stick with us which I think they definitely will. I feel more confident about my technological abilities and I feel more prepared for college courses.

Class Recap 1/28

Today in class we went to the media lab and did some research on specific states during reconstruction. My group was assigned to Georgia. We also looked at a politic cartoon that depicted KKK holding a skull over fearful former slaves. We were then told to fill out a worksheet on it. I didn't mind this class because it was different than the other ones!

Class Recap 1/24

Today in class we started talking about Lincoln's plan of restoration versus Charles Summer's plan of reconstruction. We also listened to an interview with Virginia's first black governor and another guy who was part of a Confederate Organization. the guy part of the organization was trying very hard to avert the fact that slavery was the cause of the civil war by changing the subject.

Winnie The Pooh Quiz 1/22

After looking at the character, i believe i am most like either Kanga or Tigger. They both portray one side of me, and together they pretty much sums me up, Kanga is good- natured and has a big heart. Amongst my friends, i generally take on the motherly role of making sure everyone is happy and taken care of. On the other hand, i have a very silly side which is most like Tigger. Just like me, Tigger is full of energy. The trait that i also noticed Tigger has is loyalty which i can most definitely relate to considering the fact that being loyal is a huge part of my life. My result came out to be Rabbit. It explained that i am clever, intelligent, and level headed but i have a short temper when people act foolishly. After reading this description, i am not surprised i got this character at all and i am content with it! http://www.brainfall.com/results/which-winnie-the-pooh-character-are-you/

Class Recap 1/8

Today in class we took notes. It was quite boring and I was not of a fan of it. The only upside to today was that we finally got some answers to questions regarding the test and project that is due this week. Yesterday, we had a day much like today. We sat there and took notes from a PowerPoint... Very boring.

Class Recap 1/3

Today in class we talked a great deal about the Emancipation Proclamation. this was due to not only the fact that its what we're learning about but also because it just had its 150th anniversary date only two days ago. People lined up to see the original document and celebrate what it achieved. However, we then took a look at a professors blog post about the event. He questioned the importance of the document and stressed the fact that he believed Lincoln could have done more with his power. We then discussed if we agreed of disagreed with him and then proceeded to have a worksheet on the Gettysburg Address.
